The Cayes

Down town San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.San Pedro Town is located on Ambergris Caye, some 35 miles North of Belize City. Here visitors can dive, fish, snorkel, wind surf, day sail and beach comb to their hearts content. Restaurants, bars and nightclubs offer evening entertainment for those who tire of moonlit strolls along the beaches. The shopper can purchase wood carvings made from local hardwoods, black coral and shell jewelry manufactured by local craftsmen, handicrafts imported from Guatemala and variety of T-shirts and beach wear.

Caye Caulker, located a few miles south of Ambergris Caye, is a budget traveler's paradise and is known for its unspoiled atmosphere, relaxed pace and lush, tropical vegetation. Activities include diving, fishing, snorkeling and day sailing.

Belize's three offshore atolls, located beyond the Barrier Reef, offer fine diving and fishing for the serious sport person. The most famous of these are the Lighthouse Reef, the location of the renowned Blue Hole, a huge under water cave which Jacques Cousteau investigated in 1976, Half Moon Caye contains a red footed booby bird sanctuary and is part of a marine reserve. Glover's Reef has the most pristine coral reef in the Caribbean: parts of it are also a marine reserve. The Turneffe Islands, located nearer to the mainland than the other two atolls, has many miles of mangrove islands and has long been known for its fine fishing and diving. All three atolls have resort hotels located on them.
