Northern & Central Belize

Town Clock and Town Hall in Orange Walk Town, Orange Walk District.Corozal Town is located on the pristine Bay of Corozal near the Mexican border. Visitors may view the remains of the old colonial fort still standing in the centre of town, as well as the huge mural at the Town Hall which depicts the founding of the town. Minor Mayan ruins are located in the area (Cerros and Santa Rita). Comfortable accommodations are available with water-front location.

Orange Walk Town is the home of the Cuello Rum distillery; the Mayan ruins of Cuello, the earliest known lowland Maya site, are located on the distillery grounds. Tours of both are available.

Further, but easily reached by a river boat ride are the Mayan ruins of Lamanai and the village of Indian Church, ruins of a 19th century colonial settlement. Daily trips are available to Lamanai

On the Old Northern Highway, not far from Belize City, are located the extensively excavated and restored Mayan ruins of Altun Ha. This site was important as a ceremonial and trading centre: the unique jade head sculpture of Kinich Ahau (the Maya Sun God), was discovered here.

Crooked Tree Wildlife Bird Sanctuary and Bermudian Landing Baboon (Black Howler Monkey) Sanctuary are located a short distance north of Belize City. Half or full-day excursions, originating in Belize City, offer the opportunity to see a variety of exotic birds (including the almost-extinct Jabiru stork), mammals and reptiles in their natural habitats. Overnight accommodations are available with prior arrangement.

Other nature-oriented excursions include boat trips to view manatees in the Southern Lagoon and howler monkeys along the Belize River; alternatively, snorkeling and swimming among the colorful coral and fish life along the Barrier Reef and visits to historic St. George's Caye, Belize's first Capital, are also available.
