Western Belize
The Belize Zoo is located 30 miles west of Belize City. Here, you receive a guided tour and an explanation of the lifestyle and habits of each of the animals, birds and reptiles - all native to Belize.
Belmopan is the nation's capital and the home of the National Collection of Archaeological Artifacts. Nearby is Guanacaste Park, a national reserve deriving its name from the guanacaste (tubroose) trees growing there; many other species of rain forest trees can also be found in the park. Accommodations can be arranged in the area. Activities include horse back rides through the jungle, river trips, bird watching.
There are several Mennonite Communities in Belize such as Spanish Lookout, Blue Creek and Barton Creek. Descended from German farmers who sought refuge here after facing religious persecution elsewhere, they add variety to the Belizean scene with their unique customs, and traditional dress and language.
San Ignacio is a popular tourist destination. Comfortable hotels - San Ignacio Hotel, or cottage-style accommodation is available at Chaa Creek Cottages, Windy Hill Cottages, DuPlooys Resort, Nabitunich Stone Cottages and Maya Mountain Lodge, among others. Day trips, originating either in Belize City or in San Ignacio, are available to areas such as the Mountain Pine Ridge and its waterfalls, rapids and caves, as well as the spectacular Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. Jungle camping trips, canoeing, birding, nature and horseback tours are only a few of the activities available. Tours to the ancient Mayan City of Tikal (Guatemala) can be easily arranged since San Ignacio Town is approximately two hours away.
